Long Exposures and Flash

So the other day the sunset was shaping up to look pretty good, but I had committed to shooting the full moon rising instead... I went down to Campbells Bay on the shore and took a few shots while I was waiting for the moon. Whilst there I noticed as it was also high tide (Yup, moonrise, sunset and high tide combo) there were waves crashing against the walkway. I have tried to get a similar shot to this before, and although it was not my intention on this particular outing I thought I would give it a go.
I set my camera up with a frame that would allow my to see the water splashing up and the moon and horizon. The basic idea was to have the shutter open for an extended period of time (8~ seconds) and when the waves crashed I would manually fire the flash. As you can see in the above shot, I got it right! Once... When I was about to leave I noticed a decent set of waves coming in so I stayed where I was.. As you can see in the picture below, this was a little more than I had bargained for and as the wave crashed up onto the footpath to get me and all my gear absolutely soaked, I grabbed my tripod to try and get the camera out of the salt water... Shutter was still open and you can see here the trail of the moon, and the very faint splash of water.. Everything got wet.
In hindsight, I learned that it would've been better to just leave the camera there... This could've been an excellent shot!
